FLORIDA'S LIGHTHOUSES ARE IMPERILED

Lighthouses played a critical role in Florida’s history; making it possible to explore, settle and develop Florida by using its 1350 miles of coastline (second only to Alaska in states with longest coastline). Only 29 lighthouses remain today. A 2002 study done by the State of Florida estimates that it will take almost $20 million dollars to preserve these towers.

The Florida Lighthouse Association’s (FLA) mission is to safeguard Florida’s remaining lighthouses for future generations by supporting community based restoration, preservation and education efforts.

Gifts from individuals play a critical role in protecting, preserving & restoring Florida's lighthouses!

HOW GIFTS CAN HELP SAVE LIGHTHOUSES

EVERY gift is a valued contribution that will help with for the protection, preservation and restoration of Florida's 29 remaining historic lighthouses. Here are some examples of what your gift can do ~

Your gift of $1 can provide one day of educational program on Florida maritime history or science to a school child through the "Keeper in the Classroom" or field trip programs of local lighthouses.  Recently a school district had to cut back on a planned field trip to a local lighthouse.  Through an individual's gift of $100 two buses were scheduled and 120 students were able to participate in this important historical adventure.

Your gift of $10 can provide a days work for a team of archaeological graduate students striving to understand the life and times of the historic Florida maritime community or the specialized cleaning of 100 square feet of historic brickwork.

Your gift of $100 can provide the restoration of an historic iron step or patching crumbling mortar on a square foot of antique brickwork.

Your gift of $1,000 can purchase enough specialized marine paint to allow a volunteer to completely cover an historic building or provide a day of ground sensitive radar to aid archaeologists in their discovery of artifacts located on lighthouse grounds.

Your gift of $10,000 can allow a trained volunteer to completely restore an antique lens system or provide a roof for an historic out building such as an oil house or wash room.

Your gift of $100,000 can completely restore all the historic ironwork in a brick lighthouse tower or fund a years worth of archaeological or historic research by a graduate student team.

Your gift of $1,000,000 will restore an entire lighthouse - that is what it costs to completely restore one of the towers -- and that restoration effort has to be done every ten years.

RECENT GIFTS IN ACTION ~

A recent gift of $10,000 from a mandatory IRA distribution of one of our members was used to help leverage a total of $90,000 in other gifts and grants.  This allowed one of our lighthouse members to completely restore the ironwork on their lens room and gallery walk at the top.

Another gift of a mandatory IRA distribution of $25,000 is being used to purchase, move and restore an out building at another lighthouse. This building was given away by the government many years ago and moved. This restoration effort will rescue this 140 year-old historic building and will be used to house an education exhibit of the science and history of lighthouses in Florida.

Yet another donor committed a dollar-a-day and those funds will help a scholarship program provide an award to the three deserving high school students who won a state-wide competition producing a documentary of maritime history in Florida.
